Japan has one of the most developed monster cultures of any country. Yokai Nation attempts to trace how the Japanese fascination with ghosts, goblins and other creepy denizens of the world have been born out of Japanese cultural ideas, and how they in turn have influenced Japanese culture and history, all the whole serving as ambassadors to the world. Drawing examples from literary works, Japanese cinema, anime, manga and video games, this panel will take a closer look at some of the popular monsters, trace their histories and contexts, and look how how yokai have been used as cinematic devices, cautionary tales, cultural ambassadors to the West, and representations of Japanese fears and hopes.
